Ontray was started in 2016 after one of the organizers of Code for Philly found himself regularly ordering pizza for his events from a local restaurant. After a few weeks and several hundred of dollars later, the owner reached out to him directly to ask if he could place his orders over the phone instead of on the marketplace app he’d been using. He cited incredibly high fees on the large orders Code for Philly was placing and mentioned he did not have, nor could he afford to build, his own website to offer this directly to his customers.
The soon to be Ontray team knew this wasn’t a problem only faced by this local restaurant and began thinking of a better way for restaurants to offer online ordering under their own brand for a fraction of the costs of the marketplaces. With that, Ontray was born with the primary mission of bringing back control of online ordering to the restaurant industry.
